The Power of Feedback: A Gift of Personal Growth and Success

This article is one of six articles in the mini-series “Feedback Is a Gift” to help you navigate these uncomfortable conversations year-round.

Feedback, is the verbal and nonverbal process of communicating information about the effects of someone’s actions and behaviors.  Feedback isn’t just words. We give feedback through our tone of voice as well as our body language.  Imagine the simple phrase, “What did you do?”  If your voice inflects up and down as you say it, one will know that you’re happy and surprised.  Say it with force and inflections that go up, and immediately the person on the receiving end knows you’re upset and angry.

Unknowingly we give and receive feedback every day.  When it comes to proactively offering  feedback, we tend to feel uncomfortable even if it’s positive.  Despite the discomfort, it is essential for learning and performance improvement.  Without it, how would anyone know what needs to change or what deserves reinforcement?  Providing feedback is useful and can be a gift.

The Importance of Feedback

Feedback is more important than we think.  A recent study showed that 28% of employees think that feedback isn’t frequent enough, while an overwhelming 82% appreciate both positive and negative feedback.  People want feedback and they’re not getting it!  Imagine the potential of a team or organization fueled by consistent feedback—reasonable expectations set, goals achieved, and course corrections made promptly.

Goal setting is made easier with consistent and specific feedback.  The study also showed that nearly 20% of employees didn’t feel that the feedback they did receive was specific.  Knowing specifically what to change can support creating SMART goals or OKRs (objectives and key results).  Feedback provides direction on the road to self-improvement.

Reframing Feedback as a Gift

To truly appreciate the value of feedback, let’s reframe it as a gift rather than a necessary evil. If you’ve hesitated to seek or provide feedback, it’s time for a fresh perspective. Consider the doors that may swing open when you grasp what’s going well and where improvements can be made. Perhaps you’ll discover the exact changes needed to secure that coveted raise or receive a spreadsheet with fewer errors. Feedback is a potent tool, one that can propel you forward on your journey to success.

In conclusion, feedback is not something to shy away from, but rather a valuable asset that can shape our personal growth and career progression. So, embrace feedback as a gift, both in giving and receiving, and unlock its transformative potential in your life.
