Long-Term Strategies Against Overwhelm

After exploring overwhelm and how to manage it, it’s important to consider how we can keep up the momentum and build resilience for the long term. Overwhelm isn’t just a one-time hurdle; it’s an ongoing challenge that requires continuous effort and adaptation. In this article of our series, we’ll delve into strategies that help you maintain balance and cultivate resilience, so you can find your stride even during a more chaotic season.

Develop a Consistent Routine

Establishing a routine brings a sense of order and predictability to your day, which can be incredibly grounding when everything else feels chaotic. Whether it’s a morning ritual, a midday walk, or quiet time in the evening, consistency in your daily activities can create a structure that helps keep overwhelm in check. The more structure your day has, the fewer decisions you have to make about what to do next. This helps fight decision fatigue and leaves you with more brain power for other tasks.

Set Realistic Expectations

Oftentimes, we set ourselves up for overwhelm by having unrealistic expectations of what we can achieve. Then, when we don’t achieve them we feel frustrated with ourselves and try to compensate by doing even more. 

If this sounds like a trap you fall into, It’s important to take a step back now and then to reevaluate your expectations. Being realistic with what you can handle, given your current situation, is crucial. Life throws curve balls and it’s okay to adjust your goals and give yourself some breathing room when needed.

Nurture Positive Relationships

The people in our lives play a huge role in how we handle stress and overwhelm. Building strong, positive relationships, whether it’s at work or outside of it, helps a great deal. Having friends, family, or even coworkers who are there for you can be a huge source of support. Spending time with them regularly can offer you encouragement and fresh perspectives.

Embrace Learning and Growth

Try to see every challenge as a chance to grow. When you adopt a ‘growth mindset’, it’s all about learning from each situation, rather than seeing it as a failure. This helps to build resilience and shifts your focus from just dealing with stress in the moment to growing stronger over time. 

Practice Reflective Journaling

Taking time to write down your thoughts and what you are going through is proven to be beneficial by many studies. It’s a great way to process your emotions and reactions better and develop strategies to deal with similar situations in the future. It’s a bit like having a conversation with yourself, helping you see things more clearly and learn from your experiences.


It can also be helpful for you to detect what triggers your stress and overwhelm, as well as remind you of strategies that have worked for you in the past. 

Prioritize Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is non-negotiable when it comes to keeping up your mental and emotional health. It can often be the first thing that goes when you feel like you are short on time. 

However, it’s important to make time for the things you love doing and make sure you are getting enough sleep, or just allow yourself  to rest and relax now and then during the day. Taking care of yourself helps us to handle everything else.

Overwhelm is an inevitable part of life, but it doesn’t have to derail us. By engaging in these strategies you can build more balance and enjoyment into your everyday and keep your overwhelm in check. Remember that handling overwhelm is a continuous journey. It will evolve as you grow and change. Stick with the strategies that work for you and be open, stay flexible, and above all, remember to be kind to yourself.
